KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori called on the Interior Ministry to beef up security in the region following the killing of three teachers last week by suspected Al Shabaab militants at Qarsa Primary School in Wajir County.

Mr Misori said that if the government fails to enhance security in terror prone areas, they will call upon the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to withdraw non-local teachers from North Eastern until the region is safe.

Addressing the media in Nairobi, the secretary general also called for the setting up of police posts within schools vulnerable to attack.

“In 2015 when Al Shabaab massacred non-local teachers in Mandera, the government promised to guarantee the security of learners and teachers, including school properties in all bandit/terrorist prone areas.”

“This has never happened, our members and their families continue to suffer with the government failing to make good on their promise to protect teachers from terror attacks in these hotspots,” he said.

“The Ministry of Interior must ensure it provides adequate security to teachers and students in North Eastern region, failure to which we call upon the Teachers Service Commission to withdraw all teachers in the affected areas until the region is safe,” added Mr Misori.
