The Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) has demanded investigations to be conducted over the mysterious death of Joseph Masha, a journalist who collapsed and died on Saturday in Kilifi.
Masha is said to have had dinner with a politician from the county, with the aim of softening their relationship.
Reports indicate that Masha, who works for the Standard, published an article on August 31, which the politician felt could cost him votes in the 2017 polls.
KUJ now wants the police to investigate the matter and reveal the exact cause of death.
“We are demanding a post-mortem to reveal the cause of Masha’s death. We also want the politician investigated to find out if he had a hand in Masha’s death,” said KUJ Secretary General, Erick Oduor.
Masha is said to have collapsed and died in his house at Cashem Village Estate in Kilifi on Saturday morning.
His daughter, Khadija Masha, said he complained of stomach pains on Friday evening but declined to take drugs, saying he was fine.
She added that they found him lying unconscious near the toilet but their efforts to resuscitate him were futile.
“We tried to resuscitate him but he only gestured before shutting his eyes. We rushed him to the Kilifi County Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” she said, as quoted by the Nation.
