The government plans to stop universities from admitting new students for a period of one year should the institutions fail to offer explanation on how they will address the mess in their operations.

They have been given 30 days to come up with an elaborate strategy that will show how every student and programme will run effectively within the period.

According to Commission for University Education (CUE) Chief Executive, David Some each university had been sent a status report showing breaches in its quality standards.

“All universities have been given their individual reports and are required to respond with corrections of factual errors and to provide, to the commission, a road map on corrective measures within 30 days,” said Prof Some on Friday as quoted by the Standard.

This came after damning findings of an audit report following inspections by CUE and released by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday.

Among the flaws revealed in the report were several breaches that included failure to meet minimum admission requirements, academic theft, missing marks and abuse of executive masters degrees.

The report also revealed major abuses on credit accumulation and transfers, unmerited award of honorary degrees, skewed progression records, and sub standard theses or research projects.
