All public universities will be closed ahead of the August 8 general polls.

According to a directive sent to university vice chancellors, every university has to be closed by August 4.

The VC's said that the directive issued by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i was reached at in a meeting held at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).

In an internal memo to the staff, University of Nairobi VC Peter Mbithi said they will close the institution on August 4. 

"This is to inform all staff the University of Nairobi will close with effect from August 4, 2017 up to August 18, 2017," said Mbithi.

He added that this closure will also set free the staff to go participate in the  general elections. 

He however said that his office will remain open during the period.
