Universities have been asked to avoid setting up campuses close to business premises within the town’s central business district.

Kisumu Business Coalition chairman Israel Agina noted that most public universities set up their constituent campuses within the town’s CBD and close to business premises.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Agina gave an example of University of Nairobi’s kisumu campus building which is currently under construction and Kisii University’s campus located at Swan Centre building.

Agina said that setting up campuses within and near business premises was risking the business operations saying that university students are known for demonstrations and strikes.

“We are not saying that campuses should not be set up in kisumu, but there is need to set them up away from business premises as university students are known for strikes and protests that normally lead to destruction of property which lead to great losses ,” said Agina.

He gave an example of last Friday’s University of Nairobi’s students elections that led to the students engaging the police in running battles that led to teargas being thrown at them.
