The Kenyan government has released a portion of the 5.2 billion shillings to settle pay demands of striking university workers.About 2.1 billion shillings was paid out to universities to settle unpaid salaries for the last five months.The government has pledged to release the remaining amount on a monthly basis.From the end of this month, university workers will be paid new salaries that were negotiated under 2013 CBA.UASU officials, however, maintain that that does not go far enough as it only caters for arrears that have accumulated over the years.Under the 2013 CBA, the lowest paid lecturer assistant was supposed to take home sh82,037.UASU secretary-general Constantine Wesongasaid each workers salary was to be enhanced from July but that never happened.The dons now want the government to meet fully its part of the bargain for them to return to the lecture rooms.
