Over 2000 students were on Friday conferred with various degrees, Diplomas and master’s degrees in various fields in Kisii University in a ceremony that was originally to be presided over by President Kenyatta.
Thousands of people thronged in Kisii town causing both human and vehicle traffic jam, making the town literally impassable.
Host Prof. John Akama asked graduates to be good ambassadors of the institution besides upholding integrity and accountability whenever they will be working.
“We have optimally prepared you to face the world. Our institution is among the best in the world so you are mandated to safeguard and defend its good reputation”, he said.
Prof. Godfray Muriuki, who is also the institution’s Chancellor, lauded the management for quality education offered. He said student population has grown exponentially due to quality and marketable programs offered.
“We have witnessed growth both infrastructure wise and in terms of population. This is due to good programs offered here. We have also opened campuses across the nation after getting pressure from our students”, he noted.
The government was represented by Prof. Celesta Sudi, the Principal Secretary in the ministry of Education apparently coming as a compromise after state house cancelled the trip due to “commitment” of the president elsewhere.
She however reiterated the commitment of the government to support all public institutions to achieve their objectives besides investing in research.
“Am here to assure you of the government’s support. We are aware of insufficient facilities and the government will do its best to ensure the menace is combated”, she said.
She urged graduates to focus of coming up with innovations that can create jobs rather that searching for white collar jobs.
For the first time in her history, the university conferred 5 doctorate degrees four of them of the female gender, an issue that was applauded by the scholars present.
