The Kenya National Parents Association is now calling for the overhaul of the manner in which lecturers at public universities in the country are paid.
According to the association's national chairman Nicholas Maiyo, the government should consider paying lectures depending on the number of hours worked.
Addressing a media briefing in Eldoret town on Tuesday, Maiyo said this will help ensure each lecturer earns what he/she deserves depending on the work done.
“Lecturers should be paid according to hours worked so that when they are working, they get paid, if they go on strike then they earn nothing,” noted Maiyo.
“In the event of strikes, parents and students suffer a lot as they have paid fees but their children end up not learning and wasting their time with the courses taking longer than expected yet lecturers still get their monthly salary,” he added.
The national parents’ association chairman however expressed concerns over the prolonged lecturer’s strike that has paralyzed learning in all public universities across the country.
He said the Ministry of Education and all the relevant government institutions involved should diligently work to bring to an end the strike and allow students to go back to class.
Lecturers and other university non-teaching staff have been on strike for close to two months now demanding for a counteroffer over the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
