The University of Eldoret is set reopen today, three weeks after it was closed following students riots over alleged increased accommodation and examination fees.

In an interview with the press yesterday, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Ruth Otunga said the university would start re-admitting students’ between today and Monday.

Otunga said that communication has been made to all students on the dates they are supposed to resume learning.

The official said that lectures would start immediately on Monday August 3, owing to the fact that a lot of time had been lost.

“The university will re-open on Friday July 31 following the three week closure caused by students’ unrests,” she said.

Otunga said that the university has looked into the issues that led to the strike and developed strategies to address them.

The university was closed after students went on the rampage over alleged hiked accommodation and training fees.

The University Vice Chancellor Prof Teresia Akenga had earlier accused some politicians’ of allegedly interfering with the institutions running.

The VC had alleged that some local politicians were inciting students to riot.

There have been claims that politicians have been interfering with the management of universities in Eldoret.

While visiting Eldoret last week, Deputy President William Ruto asked politicians to keep off institutions of higher learning.
