The University of Nairobi, Kisumu Campus Complex has officially been opened.
The complex was opened by the Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, on April 20, 2018.
Speaking during the opening, Dr. Rattansi said that Nyanza region had produced great people, such as Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Barack Obama,Tom Mboya, Robert Ouko, Lupita Nyon’go, Grace Onyango and Raila Odinga, among others.
“We are confirming our commitment to grow with future generations, we shall mould thousands more,” she said.
She noted that the British Council building was given on the promise that the University of Nairobi would continue advancing quality education in the region.
Rattansi congratulated the Vice-Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi, for staying the course despite the challenges during the construction of the building.
The Chancellor also congratulated the Kisumu Campus for passing the recent CUE Audit.
In her concluding remarks, the Chancellor, urged Kisumu County government to consider giving scholarships to bright and needy students from the University.
Prof. Mbithi, noted that the expansion and growth of the University was driven by established need and the philosophy to provide solutions to challenges facing humanity and the philosophy of excellence.
With the introduction of devolution, Mbithi said the goal of the university is to work with local communities to transform their regions.
“University exists to safeguard and provide solutions to the society. We have opportunity to provide solutions to the challenges facing humanity,” he said.
He urged Kisumu County government to work hand in hand with the University to help in putting up accommodation facilities for students.
Kisumu County Government was represented by Dr. John Obiero Ogone, CeC Education, ICT and Human Resources Development, who challenged the university to bid for consultancy services from the county since the county has a big budget for consultancy services.
He congratulated the university management for having a strong visible brand that is able to withstand the shocks within the higher education sector.
“You will continue to attract students because you have a strong brand, and a very high research profile,” he said.
The launch was attended by the university management, staff and students from Kisumu Campus.
