The University of Nairobi administration has recalled postgraduate students after closing the institution indefinitely on Tuesday due to security concerns.
The university Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Mbithi also directed distance learners, students in Mombasa and Kisumu campuses to resume classes with immediate effect.
The academic programmes at the university have been affected with almost a half of 80,000 students at the institution being forced to stay home due to unrest that was experienced in the institution for the better days of last week.
The closure of the university was a culmination of running battles between the police and students over what they termed as use of excessive force on learners protesting the arrest of Embakasi MP Babu Owino.
The embattled legislator who is a former university of Nairobi student leader was arrested over hate speech and abuse of office of the president.
On Thursday, Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi had come out to defend the institution's decision over the closure.
“We never wanted to witness scenes of students being injured or incurring problems with law enforcers," he said.
