There are fears ahead of the next university selection for the form four leavers, a few days after the release of 2016 KCSE results.
This comes after Nairobi and Central posted majority of the top grades, which insinuates that these regions will be heavily represented in the prestigious courses as opposed to other regions.
The two regions contributed more than half of the candidates who attained straight As, with Nairobi and Kiambu producing 86 of the 141 As, while the other 45 counties shared the remaining 55.
According to a local daily, experts have split over the criteria to be used in the course selection for the ‘elite’ courses that include medicine, engineering, pharmacy, and architecture.
Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) chair George Magoha has allayed fears that only candidates with straight As will get admission to pursue these elite.
“Even those with C plus can still pursue competitive courses,” he said.
Conties without any single A include Busia, Kisumu, Kakamega, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Lamu, Murang’a, Marsabit, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Turkana, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Kitui, Machakos and Narok.
Those with As were Kisii (6), Nakuru (6), Mombasa (4), Nyeri (4), Kericho (4), Homa Bay (4), Uasin Gishu (3), Bungoma (3), Nyandarua (2), Embu (2), Bomet (2), Nandi(2), Kirinyaga (2) Vihiga (1), Migori (1), Elgeyo Marakwet (1), and Nyamira (1)
