A Kisii university student has defied all odds to ensure the blind are sorted in making life easier.
Joseph Macharia, a fourth-year student studying Degree in Computer Science invented an ultrasonic blind walking stick.
The stick is automated to ensure that the user (blind) is notified of an object ahead of him, at 70 meters distance away, by vibration and alarm.
During the project defense held on Tuesday in Kisii University, Head of projects, Joshua Okemwa, approved it terming it as a mega idea that needed actual implementation in the market.
"This is one of the ideas that is outstanding. It is one of a kind to ease the lives of the blind. This needs actual implementation," Okewma said.
According to Macharia, it took him four months and Sh20,000 to actualize the ultrasonic stick after realizing that the blind had a difficult time in accessing services especially in Kisii town due to the high number of boda-boda in the streets.
"It took me fours months to program this stick into a functional device. I spend a lot of money in making sure the coordinate is awesome," he said.
Macharia is now appealing with the county government to support his dream in ensuring his idea is helpful to the community.
