Three students from the University of Nairobi students were on Tuesday charged with stealing from the institution's kitchen food worth Sh13,000.

Isaac Muasya, Andrew Odhiambo and Kennedy Ngeno were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi and denied the charges.

The court was told that on March 29, the three stole 8kg of green grams, three 25kg sacks of rice, a packet of serviettes, a packet of turmeric spice, 500gm of tea leaves, four bars of soap, five packets of toothpicks and 20kg of sugar.

They also faced alternative charges of handing stolen property.

It was alleged that on the day of April 12 at Mamlaka Hostel, the accused handled the items yet they had enough reason to believe they were stolen.

In litigation, the students pleaded to be granted reasonable bond terms, arguing that they were from humble backgrounds.

According to the Star, the said food had been stolen at a time the university experienced unrest.
