Students of Maseno University have this morning went on the rampage to protest over the delay to release loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb).
The students barricaded the busy Kisumu-Kakamega highway pelting motorists with stones.
Police had to move in to disperse the rowdy students. They were forced to lobe teargas and fire in the air as students retaliate with stones.
Police later managed to drive them away as some retreat to their hostels.
The university public relations officer Jasper Otieno said the main grievances of the students are the delay of their loans.
“I am holed up inside my house within the university and cannot access my office due to the rampage but I can tell you that the strike is occasioned by the delay by Helb to release money to the students,” he said.
Otieno said examinations are around the corner and most students who have not paid university fees are jittery.
He said it is a policy in the university that no student who has not paid the fees will be allowed to sit for examinations.
“This is what is causing the students to go on the rampage, we are still monitoring the situation and will offer more information later,” he said.
