University students have threatened to hold a mega demonstration should their striking lecturers not be back in class by today, Tuesday.
Through their leaders, the students have vowed to carry out the demonstration in a bid to compel the education docket and the lecturers to strike a deal that will see the lecturers back at work, with SONU chairman Babu Owino calling upon the involved parties to avoid taking hard stands in favour of the suffering students.
''The government, Ministry and lecturers should sit down and agree failure to which we as the students will take charge, they should reach an agreement by Tuesday next week or comrades will hold a demonstration to lament the absence of teachers in our classes,' sSaid Owino.
''If a deal is not reached by that day we will demand to be refunded this semester's fees,'' he added.
Babu has also urged the two sides to cease taking hard stands, and instead soften their stands for a deal to be reached.
''They must be lenient on each other and understanding in order for a deal to be reached and must know that for one thing to happen another must break,'' he said
Similar sentiments were made by Maseno University Student Leader Fred Makajos who also asked Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi to swiftly address the issue or resign and give room for more capable individuals.
''The Government recently wasted a large amount of money lobbying for CS Amina Mohammed, funds that could have been used to pay employees,'' he said.
They were addressing a press conference in Nairobi on Friday.
The lecturers are lamenting over low pay and poor working conditions.
