A number of Maseno University students are currently dealing with accommodation difficulties ahead of the examinations that are set to kick off today.

One of the students at the university, Mike Otini, is worried of where he will reside during and after exams. He says he reported on December 27, 2015, last month to secure a room but has not gotten one to date.

“I am worried about my accommodation this semester. The school administration has really lagged behind on addressing this issue of accommodation. I got an exam tomorrow morning and I even don’t know where I will reside,” says Otini.

Another student, Joyce Jebet, says they are forced to leave in a small room in Nyawita and yet they still have to accommodate her two friends as they look for accommodation.

“The school should have given us, at least, a week to sort ourselves out on accommodation issue,” says Jebet.

The school only guarantees accommodation for first years while the continuing students are forced to seek accommodation elsewhere as the remaining rooms cannot sustain them.

A landlord in the area, Mark Ocholla, says the number of houses they offer cannot sustain the students and they need to join the effort to address the issue of accommodation.

“It needs both efforts of the school administration to address this issue of accommodation. Students are exposed and become vulnerable to exploitation due to the limited number of houses available for accommodation,'' says Ocholla.

The school opened on Tuesday, with a majority of students stranded not knowing where they will reside.
