Uasin Gishu County Health Executive, Eunice Siria, has ordered closure of butcheries and restaurants operating without licenses.

Speaking at her office on Thursday, the health executive said that notices have been issued directing closure of rogue butcheries and restaurants.

The executive said that the county has information that some butcheries especially in Eldoret town are operating illegally.

“I have directed Uasin Gishu public health officers to immediately carry out investigations and close down butcheries and restaurants operating without proper documents,” she said.

She said that illegal butchery operators are putting the lives of meat consumers at risk and the county government will revoke all the licenses of illegal operators.

The health executive noted that the move is meant to curb disease outbreak.

“It is good to take precautionary measures and the first step is to deal with rogue butchery operators, food vendors and restaurants that operate without papers,” she said.

On the same note, the executive warned public health officers who issue licenses to rogue butchery operators saying that they will be dealt with accordingly.

“I have information that some rogue operators acquired licenses through backdoor ways, such cases will be dealt with accordingly,” she said.

Meanwhile, the health official has banned food vending on streets saying that the move is meant to curb the cholera outbreak.

He said that notices have been issued on the matter, warning that those who will defy risk being arrested and taken to court.

Siria asked Uasin Gishu residents to exercise high levels of cleanliness so as to curb cholera.
