Villagers are fearing for water safety around Maseno University alleging that it contains untreated sewage from the institution.
Residents of Eluhobe village regret that they no longer get supply fresh water from a stream that cuts across their area saying it's dirty.
Ominde, a long-time resident of Eluhobe village said that the water has been safe for domestic use, leave alone for drinking until Varsity began releasing sewage into the stream.
“Saa hizi hata huwezi osha hapo nguo wala kuogea hayo maji. Utanuka vibaya,” (right now you can't even wash your clothes or bathe using that water. You will stink), said Ominde.
This, according to residents has made their lives more expensive. They have dug wells which they draw water from.
However, this does not always work as the wells tend to have less or no water during dry seasons, as the water levels go down.
Residents are now appealing to local authorities to look into the matter, saying it poses great danger to their health. Young children go to swim in the stream, unaware of what dangers they expose themselves to.
