The students have been served with an order demanding them to vacate the institution by 5 PM today. The closure comes after the students engaged in violent protest that saw the destruction of property and also caused physical injuries to individual students and the public.

In a memo circulated within the institution's notice boards and leading media houses in the country, the Nairobi University senate in a meeting at Utalii College resolved that the university be closed indefinitely to avert more damage to property.

The university's main campus along the University way remains the most affected in the violent protests that saw SONU offices being razed down by the irate students in support of Mike Jacobs. Jacobs, who was one of Owino’s closest competitors in the controversial elections, is said to have masterminded the protests that spilled to the city's busy streets.

The elections held on last Friday, April 1, saw Owino become the former and the incoming SONU chairman. Owino becomes the longest serving student leader in the history of the university.

The University's Vice-Chancellor, Peter Mbithi, has been on a record firmly asserting that the just concluded elections were free and fair. He has also appointed a 14-member election petition committee to look into the students' complaints.
