The University of Nairobi's Senate has resolved to put term limits for executive positions of the students' union so that many students can get opportunity to lead.
Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi said on Tuesday that a committee will be appointed to review Sonu's constitution.
He said the goal of the proposed review is to make the students' organisation more accountable and responsive to needs of students.
“During a meeting held on April 27, 2016, the Senate recommended the appointment of a committee to review the Sonu constitution.”
“The proposed changes include the following among other proposals: Put a term limit for executive positions so that many students get opportunity to lead; Reduce stakes involved or benefits to office bearers so as to reduce tension between the winning and losing candidates.”
The level of campaign expenses for various Sonu posts will also be reviewed by the committee.
The meeting also recommended reduction of the role of incumbent office bearers in the management of electoral process.
Introduction of minimum qualifications for Sonu candidates was also proposed to promote leadership with good academic and moral standing.
The proposed radical changes come after chaos rocked the University over claims of rigged students’ union elections.
Mike Jacobs, who said he was rigged out in favour of Paul Ongili, also known as Babu Owino, during the Sonu elections was among 33 students who were expelled from the University over chaos that led to razing down of Sonu offices.
201 students were suspended from the University following the unrest.
