The University of Nairobi has been ordered to pay a former student Sh500, 000 for withholding his certificate.
The High Court in Kisumu has ordered the varsity to compensate the student for claims that he acquired the papers fraudulently.
Justice David Majanja said the compensation was general damages for violation of his rights.
Mr. Alfred Arunga was awarded a further Sh50, 000 to cover costs.
“The totality of the evidence before the court is that although the University knew of the allegations against the petitioner, it never informed the petitioner and proceeded to take adverse and arbitrary action against him,” said Justice Majanja.
Mr. Arunga after completing his studies in 2016 he applied to be admitted to the Advocates Training Programme at the Kenya School of Law which required him to submit his degree certificate and original transcripts.
He was given the degree certificate and told to return for his transcripts within seven days.
Upon going back to collect the transcripts, he was told that he had acquired his degree through fraud.
His degree certificate was confiscated.
