A section of the University of Nairobi (UoN) student leadership are up in arms over media reports claiming students at the institution are eating food prepared under unhygienic conditions at Klub36, a nearby food joint.
The leaders termed the report by a weekly publication mere propaganda whose aim is to taint the image of the institution and its student fraternity.
Klub36 is an informal joint along Mamlaka Road near the institution and is usually a hive of activities invaded by students.
“These students are intelligent enough to differentiate between hygienic and unhygienic food and Klub 36 is not under our control basing the fact that we abide by the law,” said Said Kuria, chairman of UoN's Union of professional bodies.
“Klub 36 feeds almost everyone in this corner of the town. Even most of the lecturers also enjoy meals at this place,” he added.
Allan Bunguswa, who is an International Relations student at the university, says he prefers the place because it is affordable.
“I comfortably prefer taking my meals at Klub36 because food is readily available and I get to spend wisely and get satisfied at the end of the day, of course, I can’t enjoy my meals in unhygienic environments,” says Bunguswa
According to the student leaders, there was too much bias in the article with an aim of tarnishing the good name of the institution.
They also distanced the university from the mudslinging, saying that UoN does not operate any food joint by such a name but that it is run under management of Nairobi City County.
