University of Nairobi student leader Antony Manyara wants the government to resolve the issue of lecturers’ strike once and for all by striking a lasting salary deal.
It is a sigh of relief to University students around thecountry after the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) called off the 78-day lecturers’ strike around the country. Nonetheless, stakeholders including the students feel the government still has a one more responsibility to accomplish.
Speaking during his homecoming at Nyambene Girls SecondarySchool in Tigania East constituency of Meru County, Manyara acknowledged thegovernment for taking the initiative of paying the lecturers who have been onstrike for quite some time.
What the government has done this time is commendable.Nonetheless, it must work around the clock to ensure that the dons’ concerns ofsalary increment as attributed in the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement(CBA) is implemented.
The student leader said that thousands of students who had completed their studies awaiting graduation were tremendously affected by the strike.
“Think of the students who have just completed theiruniversity studies and are excited about graduating so that they can go andseek jobs. They have been held hostage of the lecturers’ strike that is notgood at all.
Manyara further condemned Meru University’s studentNjoroge’s brutal killing and asked the security personnel to take measuressoonest possible and stated that failure to that, the comrades would takeaction.
