A section of Malindi residents have raised concern over an acute water shortage that has hit the area in the past three weeks. According to the Standard, residents have been compelled to walk for long distances to fetch water or buy the commodity at exorbitant prices.A spot check by the local daily indicated that water shortage in the area has led to poor hygiene, with residents raising concern over fear of outbreak of cholera and other waterborne diseases. The residents pointed an accusing finger at Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (Mawasco) saying the company’s management is only interested in collecting water bills. Mawasco MD Jerald Mwambire, however, said that the problem has been solved, adding that the shortage was brought about a Sh18 million debt the company owes to Kenya Power Company. He further said that the firm has already paid Sh7 million, adding that the balance will be cleared soon.“We have already paid Sh7 million and will clear the rest by next week,” he said, as quoted by the local daily.
