Kisii County residents have been urged to uproot blue gum trees from water catchment areas.
Kisii County Deputy Governor Joash Maangi speaking on Thursday during a tree planting exercise at Gesusu ward within Kisii County said blue gum trees near watch catchment areas is the reason the region has been experiencing water shortages.
“Residents who have planted blue gum trees should remove them from water catchment areas and replace them with environment-friendly trees so that we will not experience acute water shortages in the future. Locals should take advantage of the ongoing rains to plant more trees in farms and homesteads,” he said.
Maangi assured that Kisii County government is committed to ensuring the government is conserved by planting more environment-friendly trees on public land.
He challenged security officers guarding forests not to collude with illegal loggers to destroy forests.
“Cutting of trees and charcoal burning remains illegal. KWS officers should not spare anyone found fetching firewood and making timbers in forests,” said Maangi.
