The United States of America has deplored the excessive use of force by the Kenyan police during the Monday demonstrations by Cord leaders and supporters.
Ambassador Robert Godec urged security agencies to exercise restraint during demonstrations and to protect the rights of free speech, assembly, and political participation guaranteed by the Kenyan constitution.
“We welcome announcements by Kenyan authorities that all reports of the excessive use of force will be investigated and those responsible will be held accountable,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Godec also condemned destruction of property during the protests, saying it's unacceptable.
He urged the opposition to embrace dialogue over concerns raised about the integrity of IEBC Commissioners to ensure that the 2017 elections are free, fair and peaceful.
Cord leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday said they are ready to dialogue with the government over IEBC stalemate.
Odinga however maintained that the Monday anti-IEBC demonstrations will continue until the Issack Hassan led team quits office.
Cord is accusing IEBC of planning to rig the 2017 general election in favour of Jubilee coalition.
In a meeting with Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee on Tuesday, Hassan said the commissioners will not bow to pressure from Cord to resign.
He said they are not guilty of the rigging accusations, and they'd rather go to jail than quit.
