A dispatch from the Embassy released on Thursday said the establishment was shut following Thursday's shooting incident outside the Embassy.

During the incident, a gun-wielding man was shot dead as he tried to attack a security officer at the Embassy's entrance.

"The US Embassy wishes to inform US citizens of a shooting incident outside the Embassy today (Thursday)," the dispatch read in part.

"No Embassy personnel were involved and no US citizens are known to have been affected by this incident. The Embassy will be closed to the public on October 28. While routine consular services have been cancelled, emergency consular services for US citizens continue to be available."

"Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security."

By the time of publication of this story, the identity of the man shot remained concealed.

No individual or group had also claimed responsibility for the incident.

The shooting occurred less than a week after suspected Al Shabaab raiders killed 12 people at a hotel in Mandera.
