The US State Department has issued an alert to Americans traveling to and leaving Kenya, of possible violence, as the country heads to the August 8 elections.

The travel alert was issued April 6, saying political rallies, demonstrations and protests may occur with little notice, escalating into violence.

It urged US citizens to avoid regions and areas where protests or demonstrations occur, and also “exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of any such events.”

“As with all large events, there is also the opportunity for criminal elements or terrorists to target participants and visitors,” the State Department warned, in the alert seen by the Daily Nation.  Even as Kenya heads to a general election, the regional and international community has called for peaceful elections.
