The United States government will offer Sh17 billion to facilitate repatriation of Somalia refugees from Dadaab camps even as Kenya pushes ahead with its popular plan to close the camps by end of the year.
The news emerged after the US Secretary of State John Kerry said an additional funds would be released to support repatriation exercise and facilitate electoral reforms ahead of 2017 general elections.
“The US government will make an assistance of $170 million for Somalia refugees, returnees and humanitarian aid in the country,” said Kerry.
On electoral reforms, Kerry urged the various political parties to resolve their dissatisfaction on policy make up and processes in regard to the IEBC reforms so as to ensure peace prevails before and after the elections.
“The US government is investing over $25 million in boosting Kenya’s electoral process that shall be used in observation, and on dispute resolution,” he revealed.
He also pointed out that the US does not favor or endorsed any party for the 2017 general elections.
