Nakuru journalists started their week well after getting a free training on journalism courtesy of the American Embassy.

The three-hour workshop was held at the American Corner at the Nakuru Library where the facilitator was Philip Clark who is a senior communication Advisor at USAid, Nairobi.

Some of the topics covered in the highly interactive training included the qualities of a good journalist and the dos and don’ts of ethical journalism.

“Always make sure you get first-hand information about the news you want to cover and never assume anything,” said the trainer.

He also added that before submitting an article, it is always prudent to consider how it would impact on society.

Participants included journalists from Nakuru based media houses, journalism students, bloggers and school leavers interested in getting in media.

“For those who are yet to get into journalism, it is always good to analyse your story before you send it for publication. Proof read it for grammatical errors and to ensure that you have covered everything you intended to cover in your news story,” advised Mr. Clark.

One of the participants, Brian Lidwaji who sat his KCSE last year, said although he had no intention of pursuing journalism as a career, the workshop had opened his eyes to some principals of news gathering that he might use later in life.

“I intend to be a businessman later in life but I believe what I’ve learnt today can be applied at some point in my business,” said a grateful Brian.
