The dam broke its banks on Wednesday night and swept away a whole village.

The tragedy killed up to 49 people and caused massive property destruction.

Human rights activist Boniface Mwangi hit out at the government for establishing a pay bill number to support the victims.

Mwangi said Kenyans should not be burdened with a fundraising yet the owner is a billionaire.

“We will spend 1.7 billion to pay MP’s pension. Yet, in a shameful twist, President Uhuru Kenyatta doesn’t have money to support poor victims of the Patel Dam tragedy - his government has opened an M-pesa paybill to fundraise for them,” Mwangi said.

He added: “I am sure that Patel has hundreds of millions in his account and the land is worth billions. Use that to compensate the victims and survivors. Hii tabia ya ku-protect criminal tycoons tutawacha!”
