Kiambu Woman Rep elect Gathoni Wamuchomba. She has been a topic of discussion in the country for the past few days over recent utterances on TV over MPs proposed perks. [Photo: ntv.co.ke] When Kiambu Woman Rep-elect Gathoni Wamuchomba appeared on live TV a few days ago and said 'I want to be paid well and be honoured for who I am', little did she know the mess she was getting herself into. Unlike her Homabay counterpart Gladys Wanga who is actually the one who initiated the MPs pay debate, Gathoni, a political novice, is the one who has suffered the brunt of Kenyans and social media backlash that has seen her withdraw her carelessly thought utterances and apologise.Ironically, it is some of her more than 900,000 Kiambu supporters leading the online and grassroots onslaught with an ultimate aim to recall her even before she is sworn in.The question that one is left begging for answers, therefore, is; why all this bashing on Wamuchomba and not Wanga who set the wheel rolling on this emotive debate? Some say it is because Kiambu voters 'hawapendi ujinga na mambo ya pesa'.Well, I leave you to qualify or disqualify that argument but let's focus on some lessons Wamuchomba ought to learn from her 'partner-in-crime' Gladys Wanga going forward.First, always take time to learn and understand your constituents/supporters. If Wamuchomba had held her burning greed a little bit longer and take time to understand her supporters, she wouldn't be in the mess she is in. In the political arena, your supporters are your valuable assets. Whenever the 'dark forces' are against you, your supporters are the ones who offer you a shoulder to cry on.This is what is happening to Wanga. As her ODM party denounce her statement and Kenyans at large continue to bash her, Wanga's Homabay supporters are actually the ones justifying her demands for higher perks. Before making the controversial statement, Wanga having served Homabay for the last five years, may have known that her constituents would rally behind her in case of backlash. After all, her supporters are the ones who really matter. For Gathoni, it is the opposite.Second, Wamuchomba should have learnt first to be a politician. The reason Gathoni is all over the media issuing 'heartfelt' apologies as Wanga goes on with life as usual, is because she isn't yet a politician while the Wanga is a fully-fledged politician. Real politicians are known to say one thing now, and convincingly deny it the next minute. Finally, learn when to talk and when to 'shurrup!' Wamuchomba simply miscalculated. She chose to speak when everybody else was silent making her voice audible enough to be heard by all. Would she have spoken when her colleagues (who are not in anyway different) were also murmuring, maybe her voice would have been drowned by the murmurs but still reach the intended recipient. For now, all we can say is that she made her bed, let her sleep on it!
