The Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet has warned those vandalizing the SGR and promised tough punishment if arrested. It is suspected that there are criminals that are targeting SGR materials for sale. According to the IG, the Standard Gauge Railway is a strategic investment that has to be protected by everyone.Boinnet was speaking in Kibwezi County after inspecting the Mtito Andei station. IG Boinnet complained that there are people who are already sabotaging the expensive project even before its official launch. The planned launching will be on June 1, 2017.“We have received intelligence that some people are spoiling the SGR, their days are numbered and they will be brought to justice soon. The SGR is a very important project that will help the country grow economically. The residents should know this and therefore help the police in catching the criminals,” said IG Joseph Boinnet.

The chief cop also urged locals to help the police arrest the victims so that they can face the full force of the law. He said that the officers cannot work effectively with support from citizens.

The SGR is one of Jubilee's trademark investments despite the controversy surrounding its funding. The opposition has accused the government of inflating its price for personal gains.
