University and college Christian unions in Nakuru County have come together to form a peace cops group that will engage in peace and charity activities within the county. The umbrella body was formed during the inauguration ceremony of Secretary General elect Samuel Wanyama of Egerton University that was also attended by local religious leaders at the university’s Nakuru Town Campus on Sunday. He observed that it was high time young Christian leaders took an active role in peace building and unity initiatives and programmes in the country by applying Christian values and principles. Wanyama further observed that lack of grassroots youthful participation in national and communal cohesion and healing initiatives was an impediment to the efforts as youth form majority numbers in many communities in the county. He announced that some of the group’s activities will include conducting surveys on peace targets and strategies as well as communal integration and Christian events in various parts of the county with an aim of spreading peace and reconciliation in the county that is prone to insecurity. “This initiative will bridge the gap that exists it the efforts of peace and reconciliation in many communities in the county. We will serve the purpose of representing youth and creating awareness among them of the efforts and priorities of peaceful coexistence in the county and beyond,” said Wafula. The peace corps group to be known as Nakuru County Christian youth Peace Group (NCCPG) and will comprise of a minimum of ten members from each Christian union in selected schools, colleges and universities in Nakuru county and will work closely with various stakeholders: including the National Cohesion and Reconciliation Commission, The National Council of Churches ,Red Cross Society of Kenya,the county government, the ministry of culture, youth and sports among others, with its secretariat at Egerton University.
