Nyaronge Primary School has received over 50 desks donated by a Kisii University don.
Prof Abaya Ondigi on Friday challenged the ministry of education to allocate more funds to institutions to be used to purchase more chairs to avert acute shortages due to rising number of children joining schools across the country.
He said many institutions were forced to reject more admissions due to acute shortages of school desks that are vital during studies.
“The country has witnessed increased enrollment in public schools and many institutions are facing a major challenge in sustaining the number. Every child has a right to education and it will be essential if the ministry of education increases its annual allocation to schools to deal with the predicament,” he said.
Ondigi urged pupils and teachers to work hard towards improving the performance in national exams to restore confidence among the parents.
“We cannot run away from the fact that our academic standards have dwindled substantially for over a decade now. I want to challenge teachers and pupils to work hard towards changing that paradigm. A well-educated community means improved social-economic standards,” he said.
He also challenged the community to help schools handle some of the pressing needs without necessarily calling for government assistance.
“The community has also a role to play. Sometimes we can chip in and help our institutions whenever they are in a dire need,” he said.
