Kenyatta University on Friday donated food stuffs worth Sh2.2 million to drought victims in Nunow area, Garissa County.
The varsity students and staff donated the food stuffs that included rice, beans, cooking oil, milk and wheat flour.
Acting Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Paul Wainaina told the press that the donation was part of the institution’s outreach programme aimed at dealing with various challenges facing the society.
“The university fraternity has decided to join hands and respond to calls by the national government to assist the drought victims in the country,” he said as quoted by KNA.
He added that the institution is guided by its vision ‘service to humanity’.
“On matters of national crisis, Kenyatta University has partnered with other humanitarian bodies, such as the Kenya Red Cross to provide food, clothing and other items that will have great impact to a common mwananchi,” he said.
He noted that the food donation dubbed ‘Lisha Mwenzako’ was as a result of a ground visit by a team of 5 members of staff who were sent to conduct a needs assessment at the height of the current drought.
“This was also meant to guide us on the exact nature of donations that would have a significant impact, particularly for the Garissa community,” he said.
