Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology has established an ultra modern world class swimming pool, the first of its kind to be set up in the country by a university.

While receiving the certificate of completion from the contractor Mr. Charles Njui of Ciem Venture Limited and the project architect Mr. Samuel Kigondu, the JKUAT Vice Chancellor Prof Mabel Imbuga acknowledged the quality of work and design that went into construction.

Prof. Imbuga further said, the world class swimming facility was ready for use and she welcomes addition to the universities infrastructural development aimed at providing enhanced quality sporting and recreational facilities.

The size of the pool is based on the guidelines for Olympic Games standards for athletics and competitive swimming and it also has a childrens pool to facilitate for swimming lessons and recreational needs for young children.

The pool facilities have been designed to cater for swimming training and recreational facilities for JKUAT students and staffs and its use will be extended to other users.

Imbuga said that the facilities have been designed to accommodate a maximum of eight athletes in various races in international swimming competitions within a total of ten lanes.

According to Mr. Njui, the main pool has during the peak season been able to cater for up to 1200 people in a day, with 500-600 in the morning session and a similar number in the afternoon.

The contractor added that the pool also consist of a plant and equipment room, changing rooms and pump room, pool side shade, a canteen, offices and enhanced boundary wall with security fencing.
