The agenda proposed by the institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof John Akama, garnered support from virtually all senate members who were present.

The move, if adopted as a policy, will see more than 7,000 students on self-sponsorship programme get a reduction of their fee by 20%.

A detailed scrutiny on the institution’s fee structure indicates that undergraduate students on self-sponsorship have been paying up to Sh110,000 per academic year compared to their government sponsored counterparts who pay Sh30,900 per academic year.

“This is a big relieve not only to me as the chief executive but also to the entire institution. We want to make education affordable to all students,” said Akama.

He said that the move will help to relieve parents and students the burden.

“Initially we have seen students missing exams because of fee problems,” the university boss said.

The move was received with excitement from the student fraternity who lauded the management for coming up with the decision at the critical moment.

Mercy Nyakundi, a clinical medicine student, said that this will help many students to access quality education.

“At last our plea has been heard. This is the right way to go and we expect figures will reduce further,” said Nyakundi.
