According to witnesses, a speeding saloon car was heading towards the university, before the driver lost control and hit the student from behind. Furious students took the law into their hands by beating the driver, who was later rescued by security officers manning the university's gate.

The students then set the car on fire, burning it completely. Kisii central police OCS Philip Lucheveleli confirmed the incident but said the suspect had not been arrested.

"Our officers were at the scene but were not able to contain the large crowd of students who were protesting to burn the car," said Lucheveleli.

He added that the university claimed the suspect was taken to Kisii Referral hospital with the victim, but the police only found the aggrieved. According to Kisii University's security department, the suspect was reported to have escaped.

Students, led by their president Jeff Mitei, vowed to erect bumps along the road to avoid future accidents.
