The system which aimed at ensuring students pay fees in time and easing congestion in banks while paying fees was adopted mid-May this year as the new semester commenced. Several students who spoke confessed they had used the method to pay their fees in which they said was easy and affordable.

“I tried using Mpesa to pay my semester fees and it worked out well. It saves you time rather than queuing in the banks,” said Thomas Omweri.

The system requires one to use Safaricom’s network on their mobile phones under the Mpesa pay bill number 570570 and use their student registration numbers as the account number.

New applicants are required to use either their National ID numbers or birth certificate numbers. The examinations office in their memo notified all students to pay at least three-quarters of their semester fees by July 8, 2016.

Other students, however, said they are not subscribers to Safaricom and thus could not benefit from the system.

“The payment system should also involve other mobile subscribers like Airtel and Orange so as to accommodate all students,” said Victor Otieno.
