The Kisii campus of Mt Kenya University has announced plans to launch a community radio to broadcast within the institution and its environs.
The university has set aside Sh10 million that will be used to procure essential instruments to help initiate the project, said Prof Albert Getabu, the principal, who was speaking in his office on Monday during a meeting with students’ representatives.
He said the institution’s proprietor, Sam Gichuru, will be releasing an additional Sh5 million that will complete the project in time in a bid to have journalism students carry out their practical work.
“I am happy to announce that we are about to procure equipment worth Sh15 million of setting up a small frequency radio station. It will be important to the community since it will be run by professionals and our students,” he said.
“We would like to produce competitive journalist in the country and we can only do that with exposing our students to practical,” he added.
Student secretary general Cyrus Makori lauded the management for yielding up to calls from the students’ family without subjecting students to bureaucracy as is the norm of many institutions.
“As students, we are very happy that we had to do this without necessarily embroiling ourselves in a quarrel. We really move forward in working with the administration,” he said.
