The land was donated by renowned academician and former chairman of the council, Prof Joseph Nyasani, last year.

The university has been offering medical courses in the rented building opposite the Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital.

Deputy vice chancellor Maurice Amutabi on Tuesday said the construction of the medical school will start immediately following a partnership with the county government of kisii.

“The land was donated last year and it has taken long for us to start official construction. I am happy that all logistics are in place after a successful partnership with the Kisii county government,” Prof Amutabi said.

He said the institution will take its first batch of medical student from the ongoing recruitment of 2014 KCSE candidates and they are expected to continue using the rented building - Nyakongo Towers - till the construction of the medical school is complete.

“We are going to welcome our first batch of medical students this year. The facilities in the referral hospitals are available hence they will use the current building where other medical related courses are undertaken,” he said.

The institution will join established institutions such as University of Nairobi and Moi University in offering the lucrative course.
