Speaking on Tuesday during his official welcoming of first-year students, Prof Akama told students to remain vigilant as they use bodaboda as well as matatus, where he encouraged them to warn cyclists against speeding and wrong driving.

This comes after the late Jared Nyangaresi, a fourth-year student from the institution was among three people who died in a road accident along Kisii-Kisumu road on Sunday.

The don raised a concern where incidents of bodaboda accidents that involved students from the university were becoming rampant every year.

“If you see a bodaboda cycling recklessly please don’t keep silent but raise an alarm to save your soul,” said Akama.

He also advised students to have phone numbers of specific cyclists in whom they are confident with.

“You have a great future ahead and so you must not allow yourself to die young while still in this university,” he added.

About 4,000 new students have been admitted to the university.
