Detectives in Nakuru have impounded two Nissan matatus bearing similar registration numbers.
The two vehicles were impounded early Tuesday after an insurance firm reported the matter to the police.
The vehicles belonging to 2NK Sacco and Farasi Express Sacco bear the registration number KBD 280Y.
The owner of the 2NK matatu, Joseph Kabiru, said he imported the vehicle from Japan in 2008 and since then the vehicle has been operating on the Nyeri-Nakuru route.
“'I was shocked too as I was only informed of the anomaly by a staff from Direct Line Insurance who called me inquiring whether my vehicle had been involved in a road accident,” said Kabiru.
The second vehicle is the one that was involved in an accident at Salgaa before it was towed to Nairobi for repair.
The owner’s father said that his son, who is a teacher, purchased the vehicle from a Kisii businessman in July this year.
“'I was shocked too to see the vehicles bearing the same registration numbers,” he said.
Police have launched investigations into the matter to establish how the registration anomaly occurred.
