An acute water shortage has hit at least 5 estates in Nairobi over the past one week, with vendors taking full advantage of the situation to reap massive profits.
In Huruma estate residents have disclosed that over the past one month water has been a riddle to them leaving them at the mercy of dry taps a situation they are becoming used to.
However, Mr John Mwangi who runs an illegal water connection along the Moi Air Base main pipe has been making massive profits due to the shortage.
Mwangi used to sell 20 liters jerrican of water at Sh20 but now charges sh50 for the same.
"I make between sh4,000 to Sh10,000 per day from selling clean water from Air Force main water line," said Mwangi.
Businessmen at Kiamaiko- the biggest goat market in Huruma have also expressed fears of disease outbreak in the area if the situation will persist since they won't have enough water for cleaning the area after slaughtering.
The situation in Mathare is also worse as locals fear that the situation may encourage vendors to hike water prices, while in South C residents have lacked water for one week forcing most of them o invest in storage containers to reserve water.
