Veteran politician Salim Ahmed Bamahriz, who became popular because of his role in the struggle for multi-party democracy, has died at the age of 74.
Bamahriz is said to have passed away on Saturday at Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharja, United Arab Emirates, after a long battle with diabetes.
He will be laid to rest at Sheikh Zayyid in Ajman, Dubai, where he has been living since he left the nation 10 years ago.
Bamahriz has ten children and two wives, Fatma and Fatiya.
Fatiya lives with his children in Dubai while his other wife Fatma is in Yemen with the rest of the family.
The former politician’s siblings and his extended family reside in Mombasa where he was born.
"My brother died on Saturday after a long battle with diabetes. He will be remembered for the role he played in Kenya's second liberation and if there is anyone he may have wronged, I am asking for forgiveness on his behalf," said Mohamed Salim, his younger brother.
Bamahriz fought for multi-party democracy alongside Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenneth Matiba, Martin Shikuku, Masinde Muliro, Charles Rubia, James Orengo, Gitobu Imanyara and Paul Muite.
