Kisii University Vice-Chancellor Prof. John Akama has called for a dialogue between the striking University lecturers and the Ministry of Education.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, the two parties need to deliberate on the educational stalemate witnessed in the country in the wake of the dons’ strike over the 2017-2022 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)
Prof. Akama who was speaking to the media at Gusii Institute of Technology on Tuesday said that the welfare of the learners is at stake.
“Education stakeholders should support the committee appointed by the education ministry to deliberate on modalities of ending the ongoing university workers strike. The university students are really suffering, they are losing a lot. Imagine those that have only one semester to finish their campus education and those that are ready to graduate, what will become of them,” said the Vice-Chancellor.
Prof Akama appealed to the striking workers to put the interest of the students above their own and not let them suffer at the expense of their quest for huge lumps of money.
“It is okay to fight for your rights but not at the expense of others. The students too have the right to be taught as they have paid for that education. This is the reason why it is important for stakeholders to come to a consensus,” said Prof. Akama.
Expressing optimism the committee will deliver and solve the stalemate, Prof Akama noted the matter will be analyzed and a permanent solution to end the problem found.
This comes even as universities managements threatened to sack all striking workers.
