The victim who moved to the Moi University main campus at Kesses, Uasin Gishu County says it has remained to be a matter of 'everybody for themselves' in relation to their security while at school.

“The government has not taken security seriously especially in institutions of higher learning. If such an attack was to happen here, it could be more severe than what happened in Garissa as there are more students. We need more security in our institutions,” said one of the victims at Kesses during the marking of two years since the attack.

Similar sentiments were shared by Gideon Okeyo who survived the attack but lost many of his comrades together with his first cousin.

“Two years down the line I can say nothing has changed concerning security in universities. For example here in Moi, anybody can come in, do whatever he/she wishes and leave,” said Okeyo who also criticized the government for not helping victims of the incident.

“There are many of my fellow comrades who we were together at the Garissa University struggling just because of lack of fees and money to cater for medical expenses just because the government did nothing to ensure our lives as victims go on smoothly,” he added.

However, Moi University Dean of students Dr. John Ayieko said they have been working on improving the security at the institution since the unfortunate incident.

“For now as an institution, we don’t take chances, any person who is coming in we have to be cautious, we have tried as much as possible to tighten our security. Right now we are trying to make our university more secure in terms of putting up a stone wall so that people don’t’ just come in because of the walls being porous,” he said.
