Business people across the CBD have lamented the dwindling profits, especially on the days when the demos sweep through the Nairobi central area.

"People don't have the money to spend anymore on certain things... eating out is more of a luxury than of a necessity and people choose not to. So it affects business in one way or another," said Linda Karanja, a restaurant business owner.

"They choose to demonstrate at lunch time which is basically my busiest time but they choose to start demonstrating at midday," she added.

"The sales declined. On Monday we don't sell, on Fridays we don't seller," said an owner of a cyber cafe business.

The private sector has already started counting hefty losses.

"It has become a major concern for the business community where we find that we have businesses shutting down. And we feel that it is important to raise this as a major concern of the economy," Ms Karanja said.
